Meta Platforms announced Monday, September 28, that it has hired MongoDB CEO Chirantan "CJ" Desai to lead a brand-new business unit, Meta Enterprise Platform, aimed at selling Meta's AI models, agents, and infrastructure to corporate customers. Desai will serve as chief enterprise platform officer and report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

What Meta Announced

Zuckerberg wrote on X: "Today we are starting the next major pillar of our business, Meta Enterprise Platform," saying the unit will help businesses "use AI to grow and transform in new ways." He said Meta plans to draw on "strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of working closely with many businesses."

What the Platform Will Initially Offer

Meta Enterprise Platform will start by bringing four products to businesses and developers: the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, the Muse API, and Muse Code. Meta Business Agent, described as having a simpler feature set, can answer common product questions, generate buying recommendations, and help resolve certain technical issues. Meta has not announced pricing or a launch schedule for the enterprise offerings, and it's widely believed the eventual portfolio will also include infrastructure services.

Security as a Selling Point

Desai said in a statement: "Meta Enterprise Platform will focus on turning its AI stack into products and services that companies can deploy for their own businesses. As with Muse, security and privacy are built into Meta's enterprise products from the outset." The company's AI security roadmap includes a feature called Muse Confidential VM, set to roll out later this year, aimed at reassuring risk-averse enterprises worried about AI hallucinations and data exposure.

Who Desai Is

Desai is a veteran technology executive who became MongoDB's president and CEO in November 2025, taking over from Dev Ittycheria, who had led the database company since 2014. Before MongoDB, Desai led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including as president and chief operating officer. His move to Meta comes after fewer than 11 months in the top job at MongoDB.

MongoDB's Immediate Fallout

MongoDB shares tumbled as much as 27% in trading Monday, with different outlets reporting declines ranging from roughly 15% to 27% at various points in the session. MongoDB said Desai's departure was effective Monday and named Ittycheria as interim president and CEO while the company searches for a permanent replacement. MongoDB reaffirmed its financial guidance for the current quarter and fiscal year.

Meta's Own Stock Reaction

The market's reaction wasn't limited to MongoDB. Reports indicate Meta investors also responded cautiously, with Meta shares dropping roughly 4% following the announcement, suggesting some skepticism among Meta's own shareholders about the new venture.

Why This Matters for Meta's AI Strategy

The launch signals Meta's ambition to move beyond consumer-facing AI products, like its Muse personal assistant, into the more lucrative enterprise AI market where companies including Microsoft, Google, and Salesforce already compete for corporate customers. By hiring a proven enterprise software executive rather than promoting from within, Meta appears to be signaling it wants dedicated, experienced leadership specifically for the harder sell of convincing risk-averse businesses to adopt its AI stack.

What's Next

With pricing and launch timing for the enterprise products still unannounced, and MongoDB now searching for a permanent CEO replacement, both companies face near-term uncertainty: MongoDB must reassure investors about its leadership continuity, while Meta must prove its enterprise AI push can gain traction against established competitors.
