New Delhi, May 27–28, 2026: Indian stock markets will remain closed on Thursday, May 28, 2026, on account of Bakrid (Eid ul-Adha / Bakri Id). Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have officially declared May 28 as a trading holiday, marking the ninth stock market holiday of calendar year 2026.

There was initial confusion among investors about whether the market holiday would fall on May 27 or May 28, given regional differences in moon sighting for the Islamic festival. Both NSE and BSE have now confirmed May 28 as the official Bakrid market holiday. Markets were open as normal on May 27, 2026 — Wednesday — for regular trading sessions.

Which Market Segments Are Closed on May 28?

The holiday applies to all major trading segments on both exchanges. According to the NSE's official holiday calendar, the following segments will be fully suspended on May 28:

  • Equity (Cash) Segment — No buying or selling of stocks
  • Equity Derivatives Segment — Futures & Options (F&O) trading suspended
  • Currency Derivatives Segment — No currency pair trading
  • Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) — Fully suspended
  • Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) — Closed for the day

Normal trading will resume on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 9:15 AM IST, with the standard pre-open session beginning at 9:00 AM.

Critical Alert for F&O Traders: Weekly Expiry Shifted

This is an important update for Futures & Options (F&O) traders. Since the standard weekly Nifty 50, Bank Nifty, and stock options expiry falls on Thursday, and May 28 is a declared market holiday, NSE has shifted the weekly expiry to Wednesday, May 27, 2026 — the previous trading day. Traders with open weekly positions must have squared off or allowed contracts to expire on May 27 itself. There will be no Thursday expiry session this week.

MCX and NCDEX: Commodity Market Holiday Status

Commodity market traders should note the following for May 28:

  • MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange): Closed during the morning session (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM). The evening session (5:00 PM – 11:30/11:55 PM) will resume as usual.
  • NCDEX (National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange): Closed for both morning and evening sessions — a full-day trading holiday.

Settlement Cycle: What Happens to May 27 Trades?

Indian stock exchanges follow a T+1 settlement cycle for equity delivery trades. Any stock purchases made on Wednesday, May 27 will settle on Friday, May 29, 2026 — the next available trading day after the Bakrid holiday. Investors should factor this into their delivery and funds planning accordingly.

Next Stock Market Holiday After Bakrid

After the Bakrid closure, Indian stock markets have scheduled their next holiday on June 26, 2026, for Muharram. The remaining 2026 market holidays include:

  • September 14 — Ganesh Chaturthi
  • October 2 — Gandhi Jayanti
  • October 20 — Dussehra
  • November 10 — Diwali Balipratipada
  • November 24 — Guru Nanak Jayanti
  • December 25 — Christmas

Investors and traders are advised to plan their trades, margin requirements, and delivery positions well in advance around these upcoming market closures to avoid any settlement disruptions.
